Back of the Book This illustrated book for children contains more than fifty folk tales of Kerala covering a widen range of subjects. The author has presented these stories in his unique style. Though mostly meant for children, these, irrespective of age entertain and educate everyone. About the Author The Author, I. K. K. Menon is a prolific writer in Malayalam and English and has quite a few. Though Indian fairy tales are the earliest in existence, yet they are also from another point of view the youngest. For it is only about twenty-five years ago that Miss Frere began the modern collection of Indian folk-tales with her charming "Old Deccan Days" (London, John Murray, ; fourth edition, ). Her example has been followed by Miss Stokes, by Mrs. Steel, and Captai.

The personal depth of “A Flowering Tree” both characterizes this book and separates it from Ramanujan's collection, which presented “a selection of oral tales from twenty-two languages” in India. Most of those tales were chosen from printed sources, some from the nineteenth century, and from translations of other collectors past.   The subtitle of this delightful book of sketches is “The Ingredients of Social Life at ‘Our Station’ in India”. Captain Atkinson describes with a delicious wry touch the ramshackle routine.
